The location in Montréal, (Quebec, Canada), is seeking talent to fill the position of Manager Energy Regulatory Compliance and Climate Change. This job is full-time permanent.

Overview: Reporting to the VP Environment under the Pulp and tissue Business unit, this position supports various efforts to help the mills in their regulatory compliance regarding carbon cost and energy.

Even though the resource reports to the VP Environment of the Pulp and tissue Business unit, the work of this resource is also to support directly the Wood Product Business Unit. This resource can also, as required, serve the paper and packaging Business Unit, considering the responsibilities are more linked to the location of the operations, rather than their product types. The person will therefore work closely with the operating sites under the 3 Business Units and with the corporate team.

Your challenges:

  • Manage the cap-and-trade mechanisms for emissions allowances already in place in Quebec, and any other carbon pricing system in the provinces or countries where the mills operate, and support the registration, and negotiation of environmental attributes.
  • Develop and oversee the execution of the carbon cost strategies.
  • Develop or maintain standardized tools for calculating GHG emissions according to GHG Protocol (Scope 1, 2, and 3) and according to various provincial, state and federal regulations for the 3 BUs. Develop and implement tools to help mill compliance on other GHG and energy regulations.
  • Advise and offer technical support to operations and various corporate departments (executive team, sustainable development, engineering, sales, etc.) on environmental performance, carbon, climate change and energy regulations.
  • Monitor and analyze the various grant programs and assist our mills in submitting their applications for project programs related to GHG reduction, energy efficiency projects and studies
  • Coordinate the third-party regulatory verification required on an annual basis for the mills and support the mills through this process.
  • Plan and lead the carbon cost committee to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Evaluate forthcoming GHG and energy regulations to identify issues and risks.
  • Participate in negotiations regarding carbon and energy regulation with various governments.
  • Represent the company and its interest in relevant industry associations (NCASI, FPAC, CIFQ, etc).
  • Inform the executive team by participating in the creation of monthly, quarterly or annual reports.
  • Participate in the definition and future implementation of the ESG/Carbon data management System for the regulatory Carbon accounting portion.
  • Participate in the development of key performance indicators and work with the mills and operations to implement the monitoring and tracking of those KPIs.
  • Participate in the corporate sustainability and carbon steering committee.

Your profile:

  • Bilingual French and English (Required for all Corporate Positions) *
  • Degree in Science or related field of study
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Unique function for the company: niche expertise;
  • Responsible for his/her ongoing self-training to stay up to date with ongoing developments in this field;
  • Strong critical and analytical thinking skills;
  • Ability to analyze complex data sets and derive actionable insights;
  • Ability to work in a team, communicate with all levels of the organization and adapt quickly to change;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Strong planning and organizational skills;
  • Autonomy, independence and the ability to work on multiple projects at once.
