Position Summary

The Indigenous Educator will work closely with UHN research, UHN's Indigenous Health Program and Women's College Hospital (WCH) to develop and implement learning modules and workshops in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's health-related Calls to Action.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Develop a program to educate researchers on how to interact with Indigenous communities and implement co-design approaches and community-based participatory research.
  • Develop cultural safety educational initiatives for clinicians and evaluate the effectiveness of these initiatives (research into the implementation science).
  • Create a learning space for researchers, staff, and trainees to "drop in" and promote creative, art-based learning opportunities for researchers, staff, and trainees.
  • Establish, strengthen and/or sustain formal and informal UHN and WCH partnerships with First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and urban Indigenous organizations and community members to support educational opportunities and to identify urgent knowledge gaps related to Indigenous health research.
  • Relationship-building with clinical and research units.
  • Ensure work is grounded in rights-based and strengths-based frameworks.
  • Facilitate formal and informal educational sessions with departments regarding Indigenous health (i.e., dialogue, consultation, guidance, etc.).

This role is hybrid, with 80% time supporting UHN and 20% time supporting WCH.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in health administration, business administration, education or equivalent; graduate degree in a biomedical research field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience working in Indigenous programs related to healthcare and/or education.
  • Graduate degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Lived experience and knowledge of the value of Indigenous health practices.
  • Experience in research and developing cultural safety and educational materials.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Nations, community engagement and cultural protocols.
  • Experience building and nurturing relationships with Indigenous communities, Leaders, Elders, Healers, Language Speakers, Oral Historians, and Knowledge Keepers.
  • Self-directed and flexible; able to make decisions appropriate to scope of responsibility.
  • Understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and Indigenous pedagogies, and ability to navigate the complex intersection of Indigenous knowledge within non-Indigenous institutions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and leadership skills and track record of building effective relationships throughout the organization and with Indigenous communities.
  • Demonstrated skills in preparation and presentation of reports.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with written work demonstrating critical thinking, clear analysis and resulting recommendations.
  • Excellent emotional intelligence, written and oral communication skills, and an ability to communicate clearly with scientists, trainees and learners from different research disciplines who have diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.
  • Client-service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diverse teams and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand.
