Our Diversity Department is seeking an Indigenous Consultant to join their team!

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Manager Racial Equity, you will facilitate community development activities related to the TTC’s Anti-Racism Strategy. As Indigenous Consultant, you will provide consultation and education to TTC Executive, management and employees on Indigenous history and culture to remove barriers and promote inclusive workplace practices. To this end, you will also work with the TTC’s Revenue Protection and Special Constable Services departments to address systemic racism in enforcement activities involving Indigenous customers and to build relationships with Indigenous communities.

  • You will develop working relationships with Indigenous organizations, community members, and employees
  • Ensure the perspectives of Indigenous community members and employees are reflected in the TTC’s Anti-Racism Strategy and initiatives.
  • Initiate, manage and maintain inter-departmental partnerships and integrated service planning for Indigenous Peoples.
  • You will be required to research, develop, and provide training for use of an anti-Indigenous racism analysis tool/lens, through which to review, identify and remove barriers in TTC policies, processes and, practices.
  • Promote and advise on the collection and analysis of data to identify and remove racial inequities.
  • Develop anti-Indigenous racism training (including training on Indigenous Peoples, histories, perspectives and realities) and facilitates training across the organization.
  • Partner with the TTC’s Talent Management department to remove barriers for Indigenous talent in the recruitment process.
  • Review and develop Request for Proposal (RFP) for the removal of barriers for Indigenous consultants or organizations in the procurement process.
  • Liaise and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders (including the City of Toronto’s Indigenous Affairs Office), community partners, consultants and TTC departments.
  • Works with residents and service providers in the community to develop and support innovative and accessible service responses to issues and actions identified in the TTC’s Anti- Racism Strategy.
  • You will develop and implement, with key stakeholders, appropriate strategies to implement projects, partnerships and coalitions that executes TTC’s Anti-Racism Strategy
  • Facilitate the development, maintenance and/or coordination of relevant racial equity community and employee networks and service mechanisms including the TTC’s Racial Equity Advisory Committee.
  • Provide strategic advice to TTC leadership on Aboriginal/Indigenous Affairs and reconciliation, justice, equity, diversity and human rights in accordance with the TTC’s priorities.
  • You will recommend strategies to resolve emerging issues by using expertise and knowledge to determine best solutions, for example, through the use of established policies and guidelines to adapt or enhance existing techniques, frameworks for analysis and evaluation
  • You will be required to participate in the TTC's Customer Service Ambassador Program.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Your educational background including completion of a diploma or degree in Indigenous Studies, Sociology, Social Work, Community Development, Community Health Promotion or the equivalent combination of education and experience is integral and will contribute to the success in this role.
  • Your application will demonstrate lived experience as a First Nations, Métis or Inuit person.
  • Considerable knowledge of current and historic legal frameworks that impact First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples is required.
  • Indigenous subject matter expertise with experience identifying, preventing and addressing anti-Indigenous systemic racism is required.
  • Your knowledge of curriculum development/ instructional design principles, practices, adult education principles, techniques, methodologies, instructional systems design is essential.
  • Highly developed facilitation and coaching skills and the ability to teach others is required.
  • Considerable experience in strategic policy development and planning, policy analysis, process improvement and program evaluation.
  • Extensive experience applying community engagement principles and strategies and an understanding of the issues, services and programs that exist for Indigenous communities.
  • Your application will also demonstrate, considerable experience in community development and in creating and implementing responses to address changing needs of communities.
  • Experience designing, developing and delivering a variety of popular and non-traditional, culturally appropriate materials to support community engagement is required.
  • Your experience writing reports, project plans, briefings and policy papers for senior management that include strategic advice and recommendations on sensitive issues is required.
