POSITION SUMMARY:

We have an exciting opportunity for a post-secondary student with our Redevelopment Team reporting to the Director of Redevelopment, Redevelopment Planning.

The Planning and Engineering department is responsible for managing a large and diverse portfolio including plant and facilities management, capital redevelopment, planning, engineering, decision support and corporate performance. The Department is responsible for the development of all capital infrastructure projects; playing an integral role in the development of organizational strategy, the measurement, reporting/continuous improvement of corporate performance; the overall planning, management and coordination of facilities operations. This process involves consultant selection, prequalification of contractors, generation of necessary documents, e.g., drawings, specifications, etc., construction/project management and occupancy phase. Ensuring projects are executed in compliance with Hospital and MOHLTC requirements and all applicable regulations, codes and standards throughout the process.

The Hospital is committed to provide learning & development opportunities as Engineering Project Coordinator to students enrolled in engineering or recognized programs within Ontario. Your education will be applied to gain work related experience. The Engineering Project Coordinator is responsible for coordinating multiple construction and renovation projects including the design, cost estimate, procurement, scheduling, site coordination and contract administration.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning and design of construction and renovation project

- Manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing priorities;

- Liaise between internal clients (Doctors, Nurses, etc.), external contractors and other hospital departments in order to develop a design that meets end user requirements;

- Research products, materials and methods and make recommendations to Manager that will meet project requirements;

- Evaluate and analyze potential design options and present recommendation to Manager;

- Be aware and knowledgeable of legislated requirements, including Building Code, Fire Code and applicable C.S.A. standards in order to ensure project design incorporates these codes and standards as well as to recognize and communicate potential violations to Manager;

- Consult with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers and mechanical engineers as required to gather information and incorporate into project design;

- Evaluate potential procurement options and present recommendation to Manager;

- Develop budgets and detailed cost estimates for projects;

- Prepare procurement documents for projects in order to receive quotations;

- Compile multiple quotations in order to provide budgets and detailed cost estimates to the client;

- Identify and communicate risks in the schedule and proposed construction approach and determine and evaluate potential mitigation strategies and present them to Manager;

Coordination of construction of various construction and renovation projects

- Maintain accountability for construction projects and activities under the direction of the Manager, Project Engineering

- Co-ordinate all construction activity required to successfully execute the construction phase of the project including the following:

- Liaise between internal clients (Doctors, Nurses, etc.), external contractors and other hospital departments in order to develop a construction schedule and identify required resources to successfully execute the project;

- Identify and communicate risks in the schedule and proposed construction approach and determines and evaluates potential mitigation strategies and presents them to Manager;

- Determine and communicate actions required to complete construction and renovation projects to Engineering Supervisors, Contractors, External Consultants, Vendors, Service Technicians and Trades;

- Abide by Hospital and Departmental policies, procedures and processes relating to construction and renovations projects including procurement, hot work, shutdowns

- Provide direction to contractors, vendors, manufacturers, in-house trades and external service technicians;

- Consult with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers and mechanical engineers as required throughout the duration of the project;

- Provide on-site supervision of projects to ensure methods, materials and timelines are within specifications;

- Actively assesses construction progress against the established plan and flags deviations to Manager;

- Document progress of construction projects in real time;

- Ensure high customer satisfaction among internal and external clients through proper communication and execution of projects;

Contract Administration of construction and renovation projects

- Contribute to the preparation and monitoring of project budgets and detailed cost estimates;

- Report on project milestones

- Review invoices and assesses viability for payment;

- Ensure projects are documented in accordance with departmental policies and procedures throughout the course of the project;

- Complete project close out process including logging Master drawing updates and obtaining project documentation and warranties;

- Identify project deficiencies and follow up with Contractors, vendors, manufacturers, consultants, architects as required to achieve resolution;

Performs cross functional and other duties as assigned and/or requested.

- Prepare project cost estimates and budgets;

- Develop project construction schedules and plans;

- Inspect and review construction work and determine any deficiencies or deviations from the established plan;

- Liaise between internal clients (Doctors, Nurses, etc.), external contractors and other hospital departments as required to develop project designs, plans and facilitate construction;

- Provide direction to contractors, vendors, manufacturers, in-house trades and external service technicians;

- Document progress of construction projects in real time;

- Ensure high customer satisfaction among internal and external clients through proper communication and execution of projects;

- Execute project close out process;

- Prepare budgets and detailed cost estimates for projects to be reviewed by Manager

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Enrolled in a Bachelor Degree in Engineering or recognized equivalent required;

- Excellent communication, facilitation and negotiation skills required;

- Effective management of multiple initiatives with competing priorities required;

- Effective analysis, strategy forming and reporting skills required;

- On-going commitment to providing excellent customer service required;

- Well-developed conflict management skills, problem recognition and problem solving skills required;

Length of Temporary Contract: 3 to 4 months
