Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President Academic and Indigenous Program (AVPAIP) of Laurentian University, the Manager of Indigenous Strategic Community Engagement will work in collaboration with the AVPAIP and supervise the Indigenous Project Officer to inform decisions and provide strategic leadership to assist with developing and maintaining relationships with the Laurentian University community, Indigenous communities and stakeholders. The Manager of Indigenous Strategic Community Engagement will serve as an advisor and resource of Indigenous Knowledge, tradition, culture and language to support the implementation of the Indigenous Programs Strategic Business Plan. The Manager will foster and maintain strong collaborative relationships with First Nation, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) communities and develop and execute strategies which ensures culturally responsive interactions.

The successful candidate will

  • Research and develop an Indigenous identity policy to address Indigenous fraud;
  • Support the development of a Human Resources (HR) policy that is dedicated to the recruitment and retention of Indigenous hires which includes hiring practices and policies that refrain from discrimination;
  • Implement programs identified in the Indigenous Programs Strategic Business Plan and evaluate the effectiveness of the programs and initiatives during implementation and throughout the life of these programs;
  • Work with Laurentian management and senior leaders on employment policies and language policies as they relate to Indigenous peoples in order to maximize the participation of Indigenous staff;
  • Advise and provide direct support to fully realize the tri-cultural mandate of Laurentian University;
  • Management of workshop design and development. Partnership development including logistics, documentation and evaluation;
  • Build and maintain relationships to ensure we are engaging in a culturally appropriate way with local FNMI communities;
  • Advise and support on the development of relationships with Indigenous communities regionally and work with the team on approaches to maintain relationships with Indigenous communities; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Completion of graduate degree and/or PhD candidate in a related discipline;
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience in an Indigenous community or urban Indigenous community setting is preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and appreciation for the diversity of knowledge, cultural traditions, and spiritual practices of First Nation, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) peoples;
  • Substantial knowledge of Indigenous/FNMI experiences in Canada, and community consultations as they relate to the post-secondary sector;
  • Experience in writing grant applications and related reports;
  • Extensive experience working with and within Indigenous communities particularly in community development and/or partnership building ie: organizational policy and procedural development;
  • Excellent cross-cultural communications skills;
  • Sound understanding barriers and systemic issues of employment as they related to Indigenous peoples;
  • Knowledge and experience in addressing institutional racism and discrimination;
  • Proof of Indigenous identity / Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (FNMI identity card and letter of belonging or affiliation with an FNMI community).

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
