Assistant Quality Manager

Qualifications and Experience

Credentials:

  • Current certification with the CNO as a Registered Practical Nurse is required
  • Current license with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

The Assistant Quality Manager supports and maintains our Quality improvement measures within the home, assessing the environment to identify opportunities for improvement to enhance resident care and experience outcomes. Assist in Change Management processes, including conducting audits to monitor performance against quality standards.

Supports the Quality Manager in delivering quality related goals and aspirations including statutory, regulatory and quality compliance and improvement.

Responsible for both retirement and Long Term Care.

Reports to the Director of Care and Executive Director of the Home

Leadership: Total of 3+ years Nursing supervisory experience (if any), including a minimum of 3 years of experience in Long Term care

Strong written, verbal and computer skills are required

Demonstrated exemplary leadership and communication abilities

Positive outlook with a strong work ethic is required

Deadline-oriented and strong prioritization skills a must

Be a coach and a mentor

Technical Competencies

Working Knowledge and Compliance of: Accreditation Process, Applicable Contractual & Legislative Requirements. CNO standards, FLTCA 2021, Act & regulations, RHRA Retirement Homes Act 2010, Southbridge policies and Procedures, Quality Management Principles, Project Management Principles, Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English and French (if any), Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, Facilitation Skills, Recording and Reporting Skills. Ability to navigate PCC/POC documentation, reports and Insights (QIP), RAI-MDS knowledge, Quality Improvement knowledge.

Role

Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

Leadership and Communication

  • Awareness and application of RNAO Best Practice Guidelines, Health Care Excellence Canada, Health Quality Ontario, and other best quality practices
  • Assist in Leading the RNAO Best Practice Guidelines program in the home
  • Creating reports, action plans and lessons learned briefings for colleagues on audit outcomes.
  • Developing and implementing detailed clear concise resident care plans.
  • Reports and communicate updates to care plans with resident and or substitute Decision Maker.

  • Completes resident assessments for Retirement Home.
  • Delivering briefings, training and education to staff.
  • Provides direction to the nursing team in all aspects of resident care
  • Interprets nursing philosophy, and in collaboration with the nursing team establishes and implements goals and objectives
  • Provides direction to Directors of Clinical Care /Registered Staff in complex clinical cases
  • Adheres to the collective agreement when developing and implementing human resources policies
  • Has a good understanding of staffing patterns, and scheduling activities
  • Conduct and facilitate a yearly Performance Appraisal as assigned
  • Participates and or leads interview and hiring process
  • Collaborate with the DOC/ED in counselling staff in areas of non-compliance, inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour. Utilizes the progressive disciplining process when disciplining employees which includes Union involvement
  • Responsible for reading 24 hr report and Risk Management report on a daily basis. Collaborate with Nursing management team completion of high risk resident and family issues - looks at root cause analysis and amend issues in a timely manner
  • Participate in monthly quality improvement calls
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the home.
  • Attend and participate in committee meetings.
  • Perform environmental scans to identify root cause problems and deficiencies that impact quality by,
  • Be present on the units
  • Converse with frontline team members
  • Observe care and other practices (active observation vs passive observation)
  • Identify gaps in training and education that impact quality and the provision of care.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Be able to communicate effectively and timely
  • Promotes the Person-Centered Care philosophy
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge of the Resident Bill of Rights in both LTC & Retirement and monitors care to ensure the rights of residents are always respected and promoted
  • Supports, mentor and coach nursing staff in his/her role
  • Effectively communicates with staff at all levels, residents, families, other departments, and external stakeholders
  • A member on the Leadership team, and Quality Team meetings and other meetings /committees as assigned
  • Oversee the Clinical Program of the Nursing Department as assigned 1) Falls and Restraint Program; 2) Pain and Palliative Care Program; 3) Skin and Wound Care Program; 4) Continence Care Program; 5) Restorative Care Program; 6) Medication Management; and BSO team including and Continuous Quality Programs in the Home. Conducts regular audits, analysis and plan action to improve quality and mitigate risk.
  • Participates in facility strategic planning to align the nursing department in response to internal and external environmental challenges
  • Assists in developing and sustaining of the Quality Improvement program.
  • Assist with the evaluation of all resident programs and services for relevance, quality, and effectiveness.
  • Promotes equality, diversity and inclusion

Government and community relations

  • Partnering with stakeholders, like colleges, universities, agencies, and professional associations.
  • Being visible in the community through participation in relevant committees and professional associations.
  • Ensures positive relations with government, and regulatory bodies by complying with standards and guidelines.
  • Demonstrates honesty, and integrity in all activities

Occupational Health and Safety Accountabilities

  • Adheres to Occupational Health and Safety practices
  • Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of the worker.
  • Carry out all assigned duties in compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation and Company policy.
  • Report any known or identified health and safety hazards or violations to their supervisor.
  • Refrain from any conduct that puts themselves, workers, contractors or others at risk.
  • Is aware of employees' responsibilities and follows all Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers, and residents
  • Is alert to and properly reports all actual or potential hazardous situations to immediate supervisor.
  • Is aware of WHMIS regulated products and takes safety precautions accordingly
  • Does not operate or use faulty equipment
  • Promptly reports personal injury to immediate supervisor and seeks first aid as needed
  • Participates in fire safety demonstrations and fire drills and knows the Home's emergency plan
  • Renders first aid as required
  • Has a good understanding of the Home's role of the "Competent Supervisor" under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Is aware of how and when to use personal protective equipment (PPE).

MDS Accountabilities

  • Provides leadership and support on RAI coding/auditing and data management
  • Makes recommendations to improve privacy and confidentiality of health information

  • Refrain from any conduct that puts residents and family members at risk.

General

  • Communication - the Nursing Team will communicate on a daily basis and involve the Executive Director in the operations of the Nursing Department as necessary
  • All Nursing Management team will collaborate with any quality improvement for residents and families.
  • Other Duties as assigned
