About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Healthy Communities (Eastern Zone), the Consultant, Public Policy and Social Action provides advanced knowledge, leadership and coordination of the PH zone workforce development in the area of public policy and social action, and advocacy. S/he advises others how to work with municipalities and as well as other levels of government to action public policy development.

The position works closely with the Manager, Healthy Communities, and other Consultants both within the zone and NSHA to strengthen the Healthy Communities workforce to animate the steps of public policy. The position provides advice and direction for the planning and implementation of public policy work and is a resource and support to front-line staff as they strengthen and build public health competencies and healthy communities-specific competencies related to public policy work. The Consultant has in-depth knowledge of the steps of public policy animation and understands how to create and plan opportunities for strengthening practice among staff. The position also engages in public policy work to build competency in self and others and uses participatory processes to teach, reflect and strengthen the knowledge base among the Healthy Communities team in the zone and in the NSHA.

The Consultant collaborates with system and external partners, identifies and monitors key indicators, and supports knowledge exchange across the health system and other sectors. The position monitors trends, gathering new evidence and learning better practice in public policy work.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Masters' in public health, health promotion or equivalent with 3 - 5 years relevant experience
  • Baccalaureate degree in health promotion or other relevant field with 5-7 years relevant experience
  • Equivalent combination of education and 7 years progressive leadership experience may be considered
  • Eligible for registration with a professional body as appropriate.
  • Experience in planning, development and evaluation of public health programs, services and initiatives. Demonstrated proficiency in the Core Competencies for Public Health and LEADS
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders using a variety of methods.
  • Demonstrated success in advocating for public policy through the building of strategic partnerships, networks, coalitions, and collaborative working relationships with a variety of internal and external partners. (school boards, municipal units
  • Demonstrated judgment, decision making, and problem solving skills
  • The incumbent must have the ability to work under pressure, competing priorities and within tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated planning, organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to deal with competing priorities
  • Demonstrated innovative systems thinking with an understanding of working with communities
  • Demonstrated high standards of ethics, integrity, respect and accountability.
  • Experience in advocating for policy change.
  • Knowledge of community development and mobilization
  • Demonstrated expertise on the role of public policy and social action in healthy communities work.

About You Continued

  • Physical demands of the position include regular travel throughout the Zone; visual demands consistent with significant computer work; moderate mental demand in assessing complex issues and creating solutions; periods of increased workload and stress as well as cope with a variety of personalities as part of a high-performance team
  • Valid Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Compensation and Benefits

$38.36 - $47.95 Hourly
