Project Engineer

The role of the Project Engineer is to work in a multi-disciplinary environment providing engineering expertise to a project team(s) responsible for planning and executing decommissioning projects at Whiteshell Laboratories (WL). The incumbent must have an engineering degree (e.g., mechanical, electrical, civil) and will be working within the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) Whiteshell Laboratories Project Branch (WLCP) and will liaise with other CNL subject matter experts, external contractors and consultants. What will you be doing?

• Assisting in developing and accepting responsibility for project work packages involving design, construction, commissioning, and facility decommissioning activities.
• Providing technical direction to support WLCP projects.
• Preparing and reviewing technical work scopes and specifications.
• Identifying, assessing and initiating changes to approved design and construction work scope.
• Assessing equipment selection options and providing recommendations.
• Proactively supporting and implementing the project quality assurance plan.
• Conducting field walk downs to verify design parameters, construction progress and operational readiness.
• Demonstrating well developed communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Representing CNL in a professional capacity and liaise with external design consultants and contractors.
• Maintaining confidentiality in all matters.
• Maintaining and growing knowledge including industry best practices and pending changes in legislation.
• Participating and maintaining up to date, all safety and operational training offered through the company.
• Assuming personal responsibility and is accountable for maintaining current skills, professional development and professional certifications by attending all training required by the site.
• Sharing learned knowledge and skills with peers.
• Identifying and reporting any real or potential safety hazards; wearing all safety equipment related to your position as well as participating in all safety-training offered through the facility.
• Adhering to Workplace Safety and Health procedures; WHIMIS program; keeping current with practices; working in a prudent and safe manner and informing other employees if they are using unsafe work practices or equipment.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

• Education
  
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in engineering or applied science from a university of recognized standing.
• Experience
  • A minimum of five (5) years' engineering experience.
  • Eligible for membership in a provincial engineering association (e.g., APEGM)
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Use knowledge of engineering codes and standards used in design, construction and commissioning processes.
  • Work to tight timelines and support the Whiteshell site wide decommissioning plan and schedule.
  • Use excellent computer skills, including document preparation and an understanding of CADD.
  • Use well-developed verbal and written communication skills; able to persuade and influence others; able to build consensus.
  • Practice excellent integrity, respect of confidences, open, be credible and sincere.
  • Be effective at building relationships. Strong interpersonal skills such as ability to get along well with peers and management. A very good team player.
  • Have a questioning attitude and aptitude to learn about nuclear decommissioning strategies and techniques.
  • Have a positive attitude with respect to nuclear regulatory environment and required work planning and execution practices.
  • Use leadership skills and attitude. Desire to help out where needed, vision to foresee future requirements/opportunities, good intuition, imagination, and judgement. Ability to coach peers, give constructive feedback and have the capability to empower others.
  • Demonstrate efficient organization, planning, time management, detail orientation and prioritization.
  • Seek common goals, partner and collaborate with project teams and operational teams.
  • Interact with managers and directors to solicit advice and to promote implementation strategies.
  • Use initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records.
  • Be highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Work extended hours and off normal work shifts to support project needs.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."

Working Conditions:

• The incumbent must be in good physical and mental health to perform the duties of the position.
• Must possess normal physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work that involves bending, lifting and mobility.
• Must be capable of wearing and working in protective clothing and using equipment as required.
• This person will be designated a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) and will be expected to work both indoor and outdoor occasionally in the field in a variety of temperatures ranging from +30 to -40C and changing weather, in order to plan and oversee the decommissioning of facilities.
• We have a compressed work week, which consists of a four-day work week and ten hours a day - starting at 6 am.
