Compensation Range

$6,747.50 - $9,701.42 CAD Monthly

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary
The BCCDC is seeking an enthusiastic and highly qualified applicant for the full-time position of Research Scientist to fill an exciting new position working on a research project investigating COVID-19. The Research Scientist will provide leadership for and conduct research on various CIHR funded COVID-19-related projects.

Organizational Status

The incumbent will report directly to the Principal Investigators of the research study and will interact and work closely with the research team, biostatistician, national partners, and the funding agency.


Work Performed

  • Design, develop, implement and oversee research protocols in consultation with Investigators
  • Perform and interpret epidemiological analyses
  • Day-to-day coordination of research studies
  • Develop materials related to research projects
  • Review and synthesize literature relevant to research project
  • Liaise with project collaborators and partners; identifying synergies in interests and creating opportunities for collaboration
  • Lead/support strategic planning and goal setting for the research team
  • Monitor research fund expenditures and assist in budget determinations
  • Initiate/support grant proposal writing efforts - identifying appropriate funding opportunities and providing subject matter expertise
  • Develop related research reports and manuscripts for publication and presentation at meetings and conferences
  • Provide leadership and direct supervision to undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows/associates
  • Perform other related duties


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Inappropriate judgement exercised by the incumbent will result in the involvement of the Principal Investigators and Manager to evaluate the issue in question and work together to develop future strategies. Errors in performance could lead to budget over expenditures, loss of funding from granting agencies which could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, image and reputation of the project, investigators, and organization. The incumbent will require minimal supervision and will exercise independent judgment regarding scheduling and timely completion of tasks.

Supervision Received
Reports directly to the Principal Investigators and Manager in accordance with established objectives.

Supervision Given
Supervises Research Assistants, Graduate or Undergraduate students.

Minimum Qualifications
For research work, a post-graduate degree or equivalent professional designation with a minimum of four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Otherwise, an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required with a minimum of six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Graduate degree in public health is required, and a PhD in a relevant field of study is preferred. Minimum of four years' experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of epidemiological principles, research methodologies, health surveillance, health indicator development. Experience with research and statistical analyses is required.
  • Experience in COVID-19, HIV, vaccine effectiveness or mental health research is an asset.
  • Must be experienced and knowledgeable in the management of a research team and have been responsible for data analyses, writing of manuscripts, preparation of figures, and publication of data.
  • Must work well in interdisciplinary teams, and with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Must have advanced writing skills, excellent attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Must have good time management skills and the ability to work independently and efficiently with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, be adaptable to a changing work environment, be energetic and have a strong work ethic.
  • Experience with large administrative and/or clinical datasets an asset; proficiency with statistical software is required.
