Job Summary
The primary purpose of the Research Project Facilitator position is to support the Kwiakah Nation, Principal Investigators, and larger team involved in the research-cluster project titled, Understanding Regenerative Ecosystem Dynamics in Kwiakah Territory. This inter-disciplinary, inter-university Indigenous-led production requires extensive and comprehensive research coordination and facilitation efforts with the Kwiakah Nation. The incumbent will be responsible for aspects of project organization, with emphasis on supporting project budgets, drafting grant proposals and technical reports, and identifying sources of funding, as well as coordination among multiple universities, agencies, and Indigenous communities. In addition, they will be responsible for identifying gaps in the project and seeking synergies that expand the scope of the work. In service to the Kwiakah Nation, the role is pivotal to the progression of project goals, and contributing to impactful, community-centered research outcomes at the University of British Columbia. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to Indigenous-led research, experience working alongside the Kwiakah Nation, and knowledge in social equity, Indigenous protocols, and hybrid economic models that integrate Indigenous values and three-eyed seeing.

Organizational Status
The research collaboration will take place with Zoom meetings as the position is fully remote (home), with the possibility of in-person meetings on campus if necessary (Forest Sciences Centre).

Work Performed

Research-Cluster Facilitation

Project Coordination and Scheduling

  • Assist in the planning of project timelines, coordinate milestones, deadlines and collaborative activities in alignment with the Principal Investigator's goals.
  • Facilitate research meetings by drafting agendas and prioritizing key objectives and initiatives

Team and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead the engagement of the research team and Kwiakah Nation, fostering connections across departments, institutions and communities to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Draft project updates, communicating key insights, progress, and upcoming activities developed by project contributors
  • Respond to inquiries from project participants and stakeholders, ensuring clear and timely responses
  • Identify and address project gaps shortcomings, and provide recommendations to inform decision making and support project outcomes.

Research Documentation Oversight and Data Stewardship

  • Manage all project-related documents, including contracts, invoices, reports, meeting notes, and research files, ensuring secure storage, accessibility, and transparency to support the collaborative goals of this Kwiakah-led, interdisciplinary initiative.
  • Compose reports and technical summaries that support decision-making and align with project goals.
  • Collaborate with research teams to ensure reports are accurate, relevant, and meet larger community expectations

Grant Writing and Budget Coordination

  • Develop and manage research project budgets, prepare financial forecasts for personnel, materials, and operational costs, while ensuring alignment with funding requirements and institutional policies.
  • Collaborate on the drafting and submission of grant applications, ensuring proposals are compelling and align with funding priorities, project goals, and the objectives of the Kwiakah Nation.
  • Serve as a liaison between researchers, funders, and administrative teams throughout the grant lifecycle
  • Perform additional tasks as required by the position

  • As time permits, advancing research on social equity and hybrid economic models that incorporate Indigenous values


Consequence of Error/Judgement
The nature of the work demands planning the sequence of duties, the work methods to be employed, and the actions to be taken with extensive cultural sensitivity and respect. The incumbent requires independent judgment, tact, discretion, and initiative, based upon a thorough knowledge of procedures, guidelines, and regulations. Errant decisions or communications could have a serious impact on operations and the reputation of the department and University.

Supervision Received
The individual reports directly to Dr. Suzanne Simard and will be co-supervised by Steph Troughton and Jean Roach.

Supervision Given
None. The Research Project Coordinator will be expected to onboard new team members, ensuring they have access to all necessary information and resources to support their integration and success.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related science
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in creation and facilitation of strategies that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Experience with project management and accomplishing research objectives
  • Demonstrated skill in gathering, analyzing, and delivering information effectively to diverse audiences
  • Preference for candidates with moderate to advanced skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google drive, and the ability to apply these tools effectively to complex tasks
  • Skilled in clear and concise oral and written communication, prioritization, multitasking, and building strong interpersonal connections
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and adapt to changing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Previous experience in collaboration with the Kwiakah Nation
  • Prior research knowledge of community-centric Indigenous-led productions
  • Strong commitment to accuracy and meticulous attention to detail
