The Opportunity

We are seeking a well-rounded, adaptable, and independent climate change professional to join our Climate Action and Sustainability team. This role is a key contributor to the development and implementation of Technical Safety BC's climate action and sustainability program. Experienced in climate adaptation and mitigation, the Senior Advisor, Climate Action and Sustainability works strategically and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to develop, implement, and evaluate strategies to improve adoption of low-carbon technologies and reduce safety system risk through climate change adaptation. A key responsibility of this role is to undertake research to identify safety risks and hazards resulting from the interaction between climate change and technical equipment and collaboratively develop and implement strategies to manage these safety risks and hazards.

Location: Open to any of our BC regional offices (hybrid work environment)

As a Senior Advisor, Climate Action & Sustainability, you will:

  • Work as an expert advisor to organizational decision-makers and project leaders to help them understand, define, and address climate change risks and opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Safety System Risk team as well as internal and external partners, advances understanding of climate impacts on technical equipment and develops adaptation and risk management strategies in support of safety system resiliency.
  • Contribute as a subject matter expert to the establishment of organizational standards, guidelines and tools related to climate adaptation and mitigation.
  • Build partnerships and strategic alliances internally and externally to develop climate mitigation strategies and ensure that strategies to enable adoption of low-carbon technology are included in plans.
  • Collaborate with all levels of government and other agencies and organizations to ensure alignment between Technical Safety BC's climate action and sustainability strategy and federal, provincial, and municipal government plans.
  • Work across the organization with technical experts and externally with partners to support the development of code, standard, and regulation related to climate action and sustainability based on a deep understanding of the safety system and climate policy (i.e., current client segments, stakeholders, the broader climate policy contexts in which they work and how this relates to existing policy & regulatory structures, programs, products and services).
  • Present and communicate climate action work in clear and innovative ways to effectively reach and influence target audiences and optimize uptake in decision-making processes, including at senior leadership levels, externally, and to peers.
  • Lead efforts to make climate change knowledge more centralized and accessible across the organization and contributes as a subject matter expert to the continuous learning and development of the team and wider organization through ongoing knowledge sharing and transfer.
  • Leads and supports business plan projects, presentations, business cases, and reports in support of departmental needs and initiatives.
    Supports own professional development goals.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience you have:

  • Master's degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in engineering, science, or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years' work experience developing, implementing, and evaluating climate adaptation and mitigation solutions, including:
    • Climate change adaptation climate resiliency planning
    • Developing mitigation strategies, including low-carbon and energy efficient technology
  • Strong knowledge of climate science, climate policy, regulation, national and international technical safety codes and standards, technology, and climate solutions, and knowledge of best practices
  • Ability to lead projects, excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Excellent critical thinking and strategic decision-making skills, demonstrates sound judgement
  • Takes initiative, works proactively, and identifies risks and opportunities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships in stakeholder-rich environments, both externally and internally
  • Adaptability and ability to work independently under pressure with quickly changing priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
