Reporting to the Manager, Nîsôhkamâtotân Programs and Services, the Indigenous Liaison Specialist is responsible for implementing and providing services, resources and activities designed to increase the recruitment and retention rates of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students. This position will support the programming and activities of the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre in order to promote student academic and personal success. Major areas of responsibility include student advising, supporting programs such as the IGNITE Program, Indigenous Student Ambassador Program, and Elder Services, and contributing to Indigenous awareness at NAIT. All Centre staff are responsible for establishing and supporting a warm, friendly and welcoming environment for all students and staff, as well as visitors to the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre.
Key Responsibilities:
Focus on making the student feel welcome and comfortable within the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre and NAIT. The goal is to provide support services to assist students in promoting individual growth and managing educational and personal concerns.
Advise and assist prospective and current students by providing information about NAIT programs, application processes, funding opportunities, and scholarship and bursary opportunities.
Represent the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre on panels and award selection committees.
Foster community and engagement including the coordination and promotion of Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre events, Elder Services, and Indigenous cultural awareness programs.
Support the Indigenous Recruitment Specialist in achieving First Nation, Métis, and Inuit recruitment goals by initiating, coordinating and participating in organized presentations, tours and special events both on and off campus to professionally promote NAIT and NAIT's Indigenous support services and programs.
Build relationships with various NAIT departments and connect students with support and services available outside of the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre.
Support the IGNITE and Indigenous Student Ambassador Programs.
Administration duties including coverage of the welcome desk in the Nîsôhkamâtotân Centre when required.
Skills & Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of NAIT's academic processes, programs and services.
Well-developed research skills.
Cultural competency, especially knowledge of and experience working in Indigenous communities.
Knowledge of student-related computer applications (Ex. Student portal).
Knowledge of record-keeping practices, electronic and manual.
Highly developed interpersonal communication skills.
Highly developed written communication skills.
Organizational and scheduling skills.
Facilitation skills.
Qualifications:
Related degree such as Arts, Native Studies Commerce or Business Administration.
Experience in direct involvement with front-line educational advising, employment counseling, assessment and case management, career advising and/or placement.
Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience working with the Indigenous communities as well as significant knowledge of Indigenous culture and language.
Valid Driver's License.
Physically able to lift and carry supplies as required.
Equivalencies may be considered.
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration: $55,138.46 - $72,519.72 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification - Administrative Officer l).
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
