SUMMARY

TransAlta is currently recruiting for a full-time permanent Project Engineer to support the Projects and Construction team for our on-going and upcoming renewables and carbon reduction initiatives across North America. The position will report an experienced Project Manager to offer guidance and mentorship to facilitate career growth and progression. This would be an ideal role for an engineer or technologist with experience in renewable or gas project development, design engineering, and construction.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As the Project Engineer, you will assist the Project Manager to ensure all aspects of project planning and execution meet the established requirements with respect to cost, schedule, scope, quality, health, safety and environment. Successful project execution requires planning for the end-state and involves sound front-end planning prior to the commencement of detailed design, procurement, and construction. You will also assist the Project Development group to implement a construction driven approach from project inception. This planning begins early in a project's lifecycle, typically soon after a project has progressed passed the initial project development phase and the preliminary business case for the project and a preliminary project development budget and schedule have been approved. Subsequent implementation of the plan through execution is key, including vigilant change management. Your responsibilities will conclude once the project has been successfully turned over to operations, entered commercial operation, and lessons learned have been documented and shared.

This is a full-time salaried, safety sensitive position. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.

ACCOUNTABILITIES / RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Support TransAlta's Total Safety Program for project areas of responsibility and drive for highest levels of health and safety performance on projects
  • Aid in the development of Project Execution Plans including coordination of information from cross-functional groups such as supply chain management, environment and regulatory, health and safety, operation, business integration, etc.
  • Contribute to, and participate in, project lifecycle gate reviews, internal audits, and external / Independent Engineering reviews. These are related to project governance processes, project financing activities, and partner engagement / verification
  • Assist in developing life cycle cost analysis of project alternatives
  • Participate in risk management activities such as risk identification, quantification, classification. Lead the generation and implementation of mitigation plans and reporting of risk status
  • Participate and drive change management activities including maintaining of change logs, development and coordination of change orders and trends, and keeping the project manager and project controls personnel informed of change status
  • Assist the project manager and project controls personnel in the data input / maintenance of project management systems and tools.
  • Contribute and coordinate regular project reporting
  • Support the Environmental and Regulatory Specialists in permitting and regulatory planning including engaging municipalities, researching applicable regional permits requirements & setbacks, ensure fulfillment of ongoing commitments, etc.
  • Assist home office and site-based teams to ensure compliance with all regulatory and permitting requirements
  • Assist in coordination of key project reviews such as hazard identification sessions, constructability reviews, transmission line operator reviews, etc.
  • Ensure that engineering is involved for review of technical issues, review of vendor drawings and on-site inspections
  • Prepare preliminary and other required documents for tendering / construction by EPC(M) contractors and suppliers
  • Mobilize to site at start of construction to participate in comprehensive monitoring of construction activities to ensure all standards are met or exceeded for health and safety, quality, schedule, and cost

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:

  • Excellent team player with a share vision of building team culture and achieving common success goals
  • Degree and professional designation in engineering (P. Eng.) mechanical, civil or electrical and / or PMP designation or a Diploma in Engineering Technology and equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering and/or project management experience on large capital projects, preferably on-site construction experience.
  • Solid understanding of the project management process (PMI) and project controls (AACE)
  • Work on previous wind/solar/storage or gas projects is considered an asset
  • Good understanding of industry trends and guidelines
  • Exceptional analytical skills, initiative and decision-making capabilities
  • Skills in MS Project or Primavera, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Project/Contract management software platforms
  • Contract review and negotiation experience
  • Ability to improvise and deliver innovative solutions in the face of conflicting project requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required for presentations, scope of work generation, reports, and proposal writing, including the ability to express technical concepts to laypersons
  • Physical ability to internally climb wind turbine ladders up to approximately 120 meters while using appropriate fall protection equipment
  • Able to work at heights and enter confined or enclosed spaces
  • Able to travel to site locations for duration of construction
  • Valid provincial driver's license and clean driving record
