The Opportunity

The School of Construction at SAIT offers an exciting and diverse opportunity for the Civil Engineering program. Our career programs position graduates for success by providing learning experiences that are relevant, skills-oriented, and applied in the real world.

Reporting to the Dean and Associate Dean, the Academic Chair will lead a portfolio of educational programs within the school. You will oversee the development and delivery of curriculum to adult learners, and nurture relationships with industry partners to ensure high quality, relevant curriculum. Additionally, you will propel continuous improvement activities and entrepreneurial thinking to establish the school as the premiere educational institution in Alberta.

The Role

    • The Academic Chair in the School of Construction at SAIT has several key responsibilities:
    • Lead a portfolio of educational programs within the school, overseeing curriculum development and delivery to adult learners.
    • Nurture relationships with industry partners to ensure high-quality, relevant curriculum and grow opportunities for students to participate in work-integrated learning.
    • Set strategic objectives, drive continuous improvement activities, and promote entrepreneurial thinking to establish the school as a premier educational institution in Alberta.

    • Additional Responsibilities:
    • Enhance curriculum using input from industry partners and best practices from other post-secondary schools.
    • Act as an ambassador for SAIT, the School, its students, and alumni in the community.
    • Oversee faculty, coach them to achieve performance excellence, and foster the development of a strong faculty team.
    • Manage resources, scheduling, and make recommendations for growth based on market demand.
    • Support initiatives that enhance learner success and retention, such as active learning and technology-enabled learning.
    • Collaborate on school and institutional initiatives connected to SAIT's Strategic Plan and Education Plan.

    • The Academic Chair plays a crucial role in shaping the future of construction education at SAIT, ensuring students are prepared for the evolving, tech-forward jobs in the industry.

Qualifications

    • 3-5 years trades related industry experience
    • A graduate degree in management, education, architecture, or geomatics disciplines is preferred
    • Leadership experience in a relevant business or industry with a broad understanding of current and emerging trends in the construction industry would be considered an asset
    • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered

Knowledge & Skills

    • Financial and business acumen with experience leading change in a large organization
    • Exceptional product management skills from developing, launching, and continuously improving successful products
    • Experience in curriculum development and delivery, or in a faculty/managerial role at a post-secondary institute ideal
    • Possess an entrepreneurial mindset with comfort taking risks and identifying new opportunities
    • Ability to effectively coach and support employees
    • Ability to positively influence and maintain relationships with external partners
    • Project management experience and organizational skills
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills both verbal and written
    • Strong leadership capabilities and supervisory experience

Hours per week: 37.5 hours
Salary Range: $120,000 - $128,000
