Here are some companies that made headlines following announcements of major personnel movements in December 2023.
Layoffs
CGI lays off 55 employees in Montreal. The IT consulting services company has laid off 55 employees in Montreal, after having already laid off 19 employees from its Quebec offices.
These layoffs are the result of a cost optimization program, which will affect 1% of all global staff, and will be distributed across all regions where the company operates.
The Canadian financial and banking sector is being hit hard by layoffs.
TD will cut 3,000 jobs in Canada. The TD group will cut 3% of its workforce, or more than 3,000 jobs, after a quarterly report lower than analysts’ expectations.
The difficulties of the banking sector also affect Quebec. Mouvement Desjardins continues with layoffs, and around thirty employees from two funds, in Montreal and Quebec, have been informed of their next layoff in January 2024.
The economic slowdown is also impacting Manulife, which is laying off 40 people at its Montreal offices.
HIRINGS
Ability Biologics, a company specializing in biotherapeutic targeting, has just been created in Montreal, thanks to 12 million USD invested by various Venture Capital companies, and Charles River Laboratories, which has a database of hundreds of thousands of molecules of antibody paired with AI.
This unique computational expertise will allow Ability Biologis to identify molecules that could lead to treatments. The company plans to hire around fifteen people in Montreal.
Other news
Bill 149 in Ontario could amend the Employment Standards Act, 2000, to include a new section on job offers. This change will require employers to be more salary transparent, disclose the use of AI during the hiring process, and prohibit the posting of requirements related to Canadian experience.
The Ontario government said the goal of these legislative changes is to increase transparency for people seeking employment and to help internationally trained workers secure positions in the fields in which they studied .
